These flint wraps are used as a sheath around your flint so when placed in the hammer and screwed down the jaw will bite down into the lead making the flint secure. The lead wraps / flint pad / sheath work well for the larger flints such as 9/8" and 1" flints. I find the smaller flints work better with a leather pad. The military would many times have there flints wrapped in lead ready to install. The lead wraps measure 2" x 1". There was several styles used, this is the most simple style. There are examples of these in The Encyclopedia of the American Revolution on page 120 and 121.
